About the Authors: Michael C. Fine

Mike is the co-creator of the Young Writers’ Story Deck Writing Program ( explained here). He and Veronica have run the program for both GATE events and in classrooms. The students love seeing their final story and illustrations in print at the end of the program! We use Blurb.com for on-demand printing.

Mike writes technical, marketing, and educational pieces for high tech companies and school districts. He has written novels, short stories, screen plays and stage plays. His stage play "Building a Bridge" was produced in the 2008-09 school year in Petaluma and received rave reviews. See www.buildingabridgeplay.com for more information about the play. His short screenplay "Time Capsule" is slated for production for some time in 2009 or 2010. In February 2008, Kansas student and forensics competitor Taylor Montgomery performed Mike’s piece “Pushed”, placing 2nd out of 40 competitors, and qualifying for State Champs. Mike's creative writing can be found at www.blackfoxbooks.com.

In addition to having a passion for writing, Mike also loves math. He home schools his son (a 6th grader currently learning Geometry) in the subject. He also creates web applications (such as worksheet creators), books, games, and other learning devices to teach math. He is the author of "ACCLAIM: Parents' Guide" (available via the Alameda County Office of Education website), which has also been translated into Spanish, and "ACCLAIM: A guidebook for secondary (grades 7-12) students and families." He is working on a unique book with Phil Gonsalves, a coordinator for ACCLAIM, the Alameda County Collaborative for Learning and Instruction in Mathematics.

Mike has been an active volunteer at several schools. Until recently, he was an active classroom volunteer, GATE program coordinator, and school site council member at Nordstrom Elementary School in Morgan Hill, CA. He was also the school's representative to the Morgan Hill Unified School District's District Advisory Committee. He was also an early volunteer who helped Rocketship Education launch its first charter school in downtown San Jose. At Rocketship, Mike was responsible for setting up the school's first technology infrastructure, selecting e-learning vendors and products, and implementing leading-edge technology and processes for the school's Learning Lab. Now a parent in the Mount Diablo Unified School District, Mike intends to continue volunteering at his children's new schools.

Mike is a 20+ year veteran of the computer software industry, and works as a technology consultant.
